David Winter R.I.P.

The news of David’s Covid-related death, on the 14th February 2021 at just 48 years old, was a great shock and immense sadness to all his friends and colleagues in the Society.

Leading up to the interruption of rugby in 2020 because of the Covid lockdown, David had already refereed nearly 30th games for the Society. Sixty for the season was not out of the question.

David was much appreciated by his fellow referees and the comments sent to the Society immediately after his passing showed the esteem in which he was held.

One of his great virtues was his reliability. If David said he would be at a game we knew that he would keep his word and not cry off at the last minute, no matter the struggles he may have had to get to the match.

For a time he was the Society’s Training Officer, a particularly difficult task but one he seemed to relish. In what turned out to be his last year he arranged a pre-season training day at Old Halesonians RFC. The day was a complete success, even if he did manage to be so busy that he managed to avoid the dreaded fitness test! Of course he completely denied doing that intentionally!

A real rugby man and a great servant to the Society, he will be sadly missed.
