New Referees
Why Referee?
Taking up the whistle opens the door to so much more than just refereeing a game.
For some, it’s a way to stay involved in rugby following injury or retirement. For others, it’s about becoming part of a welcoming community, building friendships and developing new skills. Many referees simply love the challenge and take pride in providing an essential service to the game. Because the reality is simple: No Ref, No Game.
Whether you’ve been inspired by watching your child play, following international rugby on TV, or you’ve always dreamed of running out at Twickenham one day, there’s a place for you in refereeing. Whatever your motivation, we’ll give you the knowledge, support and opportunities to help you thrive.
Being a referee is exciting, demanding and deeply rewarding. You’ll be at the heart of the action, helping create an environment where players, coaches and supporters can enjoy the game they love. Quite simply, rugby couldn’t happen without referees.
How do I become a Referee?
The minimum age to become a rugby union referee is 14.
The first step is choosing a course via England Rugby Learning.
