Friday Bulletin 14/01/21

Lots of news this week, please make sure you get to the bottom of this bulletin!

Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens: Refereeing Opportunity!

The RPNS 7s take place in Roehampton, SW London, from 21-25 March after a Covid-enforced break since 2019. The tournament is the largest and most prestigious schools 7s tournament in the UK, and attracts teams from all over the UK and Ireland as well as international schools from all over the world, from U11 up to U18 levels, for both girls and boys. Games run from 1000 until 1720 every day

The tournament is seeking referees from all Societies to help out during the week. You can sign up for just half a day, one day, or multiple days during the week. Referees must have a current DBS and have completed the RFU’s online safeguarding module.

If you are interested please email the organisers directly on rpns7@londonrugby.com. If you are attending, please let the Society know by using the contact form on this site.

Society Facebook pages

A reminder that the Society now operates two separate Facebook groups. The main group (pictured left above), open to all-comers, is for general Society and e.g rugby law chat, and is open to anyone loosely associated with refereeing in the North Mids area. You can apply to join the group by clicking here and then pressing the blue ‘Ask to Join’ button.

The second group (above right) is exclusively for Society referee members who have paid a full 2021-22 subscription, and is the place to report on your games, incidents (and ‘vent’ if you need to!). Click here to join

Please remember that in the age of social media, what you write will be scrutinised, criticised and generally talked about by anyone who can see your posts in either group, so make sure you are comfortable with this before you type that rant! Any disciplinary / abuse issues must still be reported on via the correct RFU channels (see our Useful Documents page for the correct forms) and/or reported to the Board

Geoff Murch RIP

Geoff’s funeral will take place on Friday 21 January at 1215pm at the West Chapel, Streetly Crematorium, 296 Little Hardwick Road, Walsall WS9 0SG (opposite Veseyans RFC). There will be an opportunity to meet up at Veseyans RFC after the service. In the meantime so that the Society can pay appropriate tribute, Members are invited to share their stories and tales / refereeing memories of Geoff by emailing them to Kelvin on chair@northmidsrefs.co.uk

Covid testing

You may be informed after a game that a player in a match which you refereed, has returned a positive test since that game. In this eventuality please see the Government guidance (which is updated regularly) by clicking here

Clubs sometimes cancel their matches at short notice due to Covid: North Mids RFU has reminded them that it’s their responsibility to inform the referee, and that travel expenses can still be claimed and will be invoiced if referees travel to a cancelled match without being informed of the cancellation.

Meeting up

Obviously we’d love to set up a Society ‘in-person’ meeting, but at the moment with everyone’s safety in mind, it seems prudent to postpone this until a later date. Watch this space!
