Friday bulletin 17 March 2023

Society Communications

(including this bulletin!). At the forthcoming AGM (date to be confirmed) Julian Edwards is standing down from the position of Communications Director.

The Society is considering some developments to the Communication Director role to create a structure where the Director is more of an overseer and policy process creator than a ‘doer’ i.e. the hands-on work would be done by a team of several people.  The Society already has various different means of ‘getting the message across’ that are watched over by members, but we need to co-ordinate these various opportunities under one ‘Communications’ umbrella strategy. This is a vital part of how the Society keeps in touch with you, its members, and its importance cannot be underestimated.

Julian is willing to help and explain his work in more detail, especially surrounding the website and weekly bulletin. If you are interested in finding out more about this role and to see if it is suitable for you, please contact Kelvin or Julian by email in the first instance.

Where will your refereeing take you – No.1

Longer serving members of the Society will remember Stuart Terheege who started his refereeing career with us before he moved with his family down to Hampshire. He continued his career as a referee for some time getting to Championship Level and then became an AR. He is still the first, and only non-referee to be selected for a World Cup tournament as an AR in New Zealand in 2015. Last Saturday he was the TMO at the Scotland v Ireland international: Well done Stuart!

Where will your refereeing take you – No 2

Next week sees the world’s largest schools Sevens tournaments, the Rosslyn Park National 7s take place in South West London, where over 1000 teams will compete in more than 3500 fixtures. In a change from the usual Friday bulletin, there will instead be a daily diary entry for each of the five days next week, as our refs Julian and Theo Edwards represent the Society on every day of the tournament and report directly from the ground!
